It's that time of year again- the days are getting shorter and soon we'll see crisp colorful leaves in heaps on the ground.
One of the key concepts that Ayurveda uses to personalize the treatment of an individual is the concept of time, or seasonal change. Autumn has different qualities than summer, for example, and we should change our seasonal routines and diets accordingly.
The dosha most dominant in the fall is Vata. Therefore, autumn brings in clear, rough, light (opposite of heavy), subtle, mobile and cold qualities. Often the season is ushered in by blustery winds.
Autumn is a season marked by change, and a great time to start on new projects or endeavors. Remember, healthy Vata yields enthusiasm and creativity.
However, many of us experience Vata imbalances during fall. These can include fatigue, poor circulation, aggravated joints, irregular appetite, poor digestion low immunity and even depression, anxiety and a feeling of loneliness.
So, it is important to adjust your seasonal routine to stay in balance. Here's some lifestyle tips:
1. Ayurveda states that the most important thing you can do during the fall season is to give yourself a routine to anchor Vata. Create a foundation from which to express the healthy creativity and change for the season! 2. Herbal oil massage. If you can't do a full-body self massage, at least do regular massage to the soles of the feet and the head regularly. Herbal oil massage (called Abhyanga in Ayurveda) brings in heavy, stable qualities, carries herbs directly to the nervous system, alleviates joint issues and improves circulation. Try an herbal massage oil that is appropriate to your dosha. If you already regularly do Abhyanga, make sure you switch your oil from cooling (summer season) to warming if appropriate.
